Day 2 of Construction on Highway 99 Leads to Congested Side Streets – CBS Sacramento – Sacramento, California

Sacramento, California 2021-06-13 02:25:19 –

Sacramento (CBS13) – Saturday marked the first full day of closure and construction of Highway 99 from 47th Avenue to Highway 50 Connector. People nearby and passers-by were already feeling the impact.

Commuting time has doubled, and one shared with CBS13 that it took nearly an hour to travel one mile on Interstate 5. But many are grateful that this turmoil lasts for days instead of years.

The crowded side roads were crowded with traffic as 99 was vacant.

“There was only one way to get into my house and it took me 30 minutes to go two miles,” said Daren Papas, who lives nearby.

Neighbors couldn’t escape the sound of construction overnight.

Neighbors made a big bangs and rattling early in the morning, and nearby cars were covered with dust clouds.

Prior to commuting, neighbors like Ramon Hungerford packed their patience for the last few days of stretching.

“I’m used to it, we’re sitting in the traffic anyway,” Hangerford said.

Traffic troubles are due to complete closure. Demolition work is underway to replace the bridge floor on 21st Avenue. Saturday was spent digging into and removing the old girders to make room for the new girders. Caltrans calls this project “proactive.”

“I decided to do it now, before the emergency surgery,” said Angela Daprat, a spokesman for the transportation agency.

Some of the people living nearby decided to skip the town, but others remained the same.

“We received a lot of notifications,” Papas said.

He was grateful that the project was taking place at record speed. It lasted only a few days, not a few years.

“It’s huge to do it four days for a year or two,” Da Prato said.

Caltrans advises all drivers to come on Mondays, especially if they don’t need to travel. Please stay home.

“Use your vacation time on any day you have to leave town,” said Da Prato. “Give us space to get the job done.”

Caltrans said they were still on schedule. They believe that hopefully this speedy Highway 99 project can set the trend and move the wheels for such other projects throughout the state.
