Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) – Shooting raises concerns about the safety of the old town, but the region’s presidents say the district is safer than ever.
“The old town has taken a lot of security measures seriously. The WPD is really great and makes Friday and Saturday nights as safe as possible,” he said. Debra Fraser, President of the Old Town Association.
For the past few years, the area has partnered with the Wichita Police (WPD) to improve the safety of the popular red-light district. They have enhanced security with traffic arms-preventing vehicles from driving down the street as people roam. Fraser says he added lighting where it needed to be. On weekends, WPD uses Mounted Police to monitor large crowds. We also installed multiple security cameras.
“Security is already at a fairly high level, just because we know that many people will come to the club after 11:00 pm,” Fraser said.
Frasher does not know if a shooting that killed one person early Tuesday morning and injured several others would affect the security of the district.
She condolences to the family affected by the shooting.
“This is terrible, and the Old Town Association is thinking about the victim’s family and the other five who are still in the hospital,” Fraser said.
