Denver — Alec Fraser and Jamie Meehan give you the idea of biking nearly 5,000 miles, like most great ideas.

“One night, it was more than a beer pitcher that we decided to ride all over the country,” Mihan said.

The real inspiration actually came from a Connecticut hospital decades ago.

“Julian was a very special person,” said his dad, Alec.

Julian Fraser was a child with a big smile and a bigger heart. His dad, an All-America swimmer and college water polo, said he was happy and healthy until he was 19 and had a catastrophic diagnosis.

“He had osteosarcoma, which mainly affects children and adolescents,” Alec said. “Unfortunately, by the time it was diagnosed … it had already metastasized, it was in 14 different parts of his body, and he had a huge tumor in his abdomen.”

After a fierce year-long battle, Julian lost the fight against cancer in 2017.

“They gave him little chance of survival. At some point he took me aside and said,’Dad, I don’t care what they say, I’m going to beat this.’ And he fought with all his might against this illness. “

In honor of Julian, this pair draws on its strength when biking from Connecticut to California. Their goal is to raise $ 500,000 for the Cycle for Survival to fund rare cancer research.

“More than 50% of people with cancer have a rare form of cancer, but only $ 1 collected for cancer research is used for rare cancer research. Therefore, it is It’s very important in our hearts, “said Alec.

This week, Team JF arrived in Colorado. While teens were never far from their ideas, a crowd of supporters joined them for a ride stretch.

“There is a reservoir with a deep commitment to overcome it because we think about the struggles Julian experienced and the struggles he experienced, so it’s a tough time for me to think about him when I’m riding,” Mihan said. Said.

There’s nothing to fill the hole left by Julian, but Team JF hopes that this vehicle will give hope to those who are still fighting in this way to honor teens.

“I sometimes think of Julian, his life, great memories with Julian, and I feel like he’s looking down at us and smiling at what we’re doing. It feels so good. “.
