March is Developmental Disability Awareness Month, and even after the month has passed, support activities for persons with disabilities continue. Today, people are looking for more specialized services to help people with disabilities than ever before. This is partly due to increased public education on this issue, according to Amber Maes, service coordinator at the Nebraska Center for Developmental Disabilities (DDCN).
“Here, most of the intensive programming of group homes and SLPs takes place. Here, we establish a baseline of places where they need help, attack someone or break something. Establish the details that need to be addressed so that you can spend the day without screaming, closing your mouth, or screaming. “
In addition to group homes, individuals can learn technical skills at DDCN like carpentry and help them find a job in the community. A fully functional wood shop is available for individuals to learn carpentry skills to build almost anything from birdhouses to bookshelves.
Those who participated in the workshop can sell their works at the adjacent store. Wendy Briley, vocational coordinator for DDCN’s services, said he hopes that such programs, along with community involvement, will lead to greater public understanding.
“You don’t know their past, people you know, and just want to automatically judge someone based on what they look like-someone may look blind or different Because-they can still accomplish the same thing as you and I, “Wendy said.
Both Amber and Wendy said they encourage people to ask questions, be supportive and open-minded.
DDCN helps find long-term employment for people with disabilities through other business relationships.
According to the CDC, about 22% of adults in Nebraska suffer from some form of disability.
