Tampa-Health Organization is preparing for a recurrence of the flu this season.
“Having these two viruses at the same time would be a big problem,” said Dr. Jill Roberts, an associate professor at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health.
That’s why experts say they’re really worried about this flu season, as the flu could already be bad enough without COVID-19.
“Every year, 25,000 to 60,000 people die from the flu,” says Roberts.
According to doctors, most flu deaths can be prevented by being vaccinated against the flu.
“Go and get the flu shot. You definitely don’t want to get sick this year,” Roberts said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the low level of flu activists last year could prepare them for a tough season this year.
“This will be a big problem because the healthcare system will be overwhelmed and we will not be able to handle two different illnesses,” Roberts said.
According to the newly released CDC dataLast year, about 52% of the US population was vaccinated against the flu. This was similar to the previous season.
Due to the mild flu season last year, the immunity of the population is so weak that health organizations are encouraging more people to be vaccinated this year.
Researchers are concerned that an influenza pandemic may occur at the same time as COVID-19.
“What happens with COVID is that it progresses to pneumonia, and then what happens with influenza is that it progresses to pneumonia. Therefore, basically both diseases have exactly the same condition.” Roberts said.
Doctors say they can be infected with COVID-19 and the flu simultaneously or consecutively.
“It can be potentially catastrophic. That is, they are ingesting two different viruses that strain similar body systems, so they affect people’s respiratory capacity.” Roberts said.
She says there are different types of treatments for both viruses that contradict each other.
“Therefore, what you use to treat COVID is different from what you use to treat influenza, and mixing the two can have serious consequences,” Roberts said.
According to your doctor, you can be vaccinated against both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time.
“Last year we were saying with the same warning.” We really need to be careful. I don’t want to have the flu and COVID epidemics at the same time. It didn’t happen last year because we were wearing masks, socially away and trapped. Nothing like that has happened this year, and we already have cases of influenza, “says Roberts.
