Needless to say, the electrification of compact and mainstream cars like the Civic is imminent. It’s not impossible to provide a manual for an electrified vehicle, but Honda itself provided the manual CR-Z. This is unusual. From an engineering point of view, using an automatic transmission in an electric vehicle is easier and probably less expensive. Needless to say, some electric vehicles don’t actually use transmissions. Some vehicles use electric motors to drive the wheels more or less directly.
I’m generalizing there, but the point is that this Civic could be the last to offer three pedals. Of course, except for the performance model.
Or maybe not. The electrification shift is on track and there may still be space in the manual after the market moves. Maybe there are enough Civic buyers to check the option box in the manual to convince Honda’s product planners that there are enough takers to pay for it.
Personally, I’m optimistic that the Civic will last as long as possible as the last bastion of a manual transmission, but it was wrong before. Many times. And wishful thinking- “I hope the manual is still available on the Civic” -is easily unrealistic and can be lost.
Then again, sometimes we make a pleasant surprise.
