Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) – Robert J. Doll VA Medical Center will receive a limited quantity of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine this week and distribute the vaccination to Hayes and Wichita veterans.
The J & J vaccine has been approved as an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent COVID-19 in individuals over the age of 18.
“We expect more J & J vaccines in the future, but we don’t know how much. J & J vaccines are single-dose vaccines that are easy for rural veterans and returning individuals. “We will be able to reach,” said Candice Ifavii, director of the Medical Center. About 40% of Dole VA veterans live in rural areas.
“From a transport and storage perspective, the J & J vaccine is very beneficial to us as a healthcare system,” said Dr. Susan Duquene, pharmacy director at Doll VA Medical Center. “This vaccine can be shipped and stored at standard refrigeration temperatures for up to 90 days, and unopened vials can be stored at room temperature for 12 hours.”
To date, Dole VA has given staff and veterans more than 6,200 initial doses of the Moderna vaccine. Dole VA is currently providing the COVID-19 vaccine to veterans over the age of 65. Veterans can call Doll VA Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm at 316-469-0914 to schedule a vaccination schedule.
Dole VA serves veterans in 59 counties in Kansas, and veterans in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, frequently serve Dole VA. In addition to Wichita’s medical center, Doll VA operates outpatient clinics in Dodge City, Hayes, Hutchinson, Parsons and Salina.
