Virginia beach — Dominion Energy will carry the electricity generated by the largest offshore wind project of its kind in the United States, seeking public opinion on Virginia Beach and Chesapeake’s transmission routes.
Two pilot project turbines, each over 600 feet high, have been in operation since October, about 27 miles from Virginia Beach, with 180 turbines over 800 feet high, according to the utility. It will be operational.
This week we have a series of meetings on the project, including a rally in V.Today, the Irguinea Beach Field House in Landstown.
Before that happens, Dominion has the regulatory and stakeholder work to do to realize its coastal Virginia offshore wind project. One of the pressing issues for residents of Southern Virginia Beach is to power the Dominion substation in Fentress, Chesapeake, from where they landed at Camp Pendleton.
To move power from point to point, you need a new power line.
Dominion provides public support in both affected cities on potential routes to power Chesapeake from the Virginia Beach coast.
Dominion recently met with communities such as Courthouse Estate and Castleton on the project, Robrichardson, a spokesman for the project’s power transmission group, said in an interview Wednesday, June 16.
In addition, a series of meetings on the project are scheduled this week.
“That’s the purpose of this process, to understand what people’s concerns are and to address those concerns,” says Richardson. “We are doing everything we can to warn those who may be affected.”
He spoke during a visit to two test turbines operating 27 miles off Virginia Beach. Several local reporters arranged by Dominion traveled.
Electricity travels from the turbine through submarine cables, lands at cable landing stations, then at switching stations, and travels about 13 miles through power lines to Fentless. The project meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 22nd, from 3pm to 8pm, at Virginia Beach Fieldhouse on the 2020 Landstown Center Way in Virginia Beach, on Thursday, June 24th, from 3pm to 8pm. Scheduled at the Signet Center. 884 Bells Mill Road, Chesapeake.
The virtual meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, June 23, from 8 am to 9 am, via dominionenergy.webex.com, with meeting 325610 and password CVOW. Information is also available via. firstname.lastname@example.org Or online Coastalvawind.com..
