Lawrence, Kansas (AP) — Douglas County Regional Attorney Susanne Valdes said her office will not prosecute proceedings under the state’s new voting law.
Valdez said in a news release on Tuesday that the law, which came into force on July 1, criminalizes nonpartisan groups’ efforts to inform and register voters.
In particular, the law will make it difficult for nonpartisan groups, neighbors, and candidates to collect absentee votes and return them to voters.
The law also criminalizes performing activities that look like election civil servants.
Mr Valdes said the law was too vague and could make normal political activity a felony.
