Dr. Jara resumes role, discusses employee vaccine mandate with Clark County Education Association – Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada 2021-12-06 21:13:19 –

Las Vegas (KLAS) — Dr. Jesus Jara, director of the Clark County School District, returned to his post saying he intends to stay in the school district after officially taking office on Friday.

One of Monday’s first business items included discussing employee COVID-19 vaccine obligations.

It’s been three months since the school board gave Dr. Jara the ability to develop missions.

The Clark County Education Association (CCEA) wants the district to be ready to get back on track.

John Vellardita is Executive Director of CCEA and told 8 News Now. Currently, the vaccine mission is complex and not a black-and-white issue.

“Mainly because everything we saw went well, everything was put on hold. Again, that’s the school board’s political ploy,” he said. .. “I don’t want to see a policy that forces educators to make career decisions when there are 800 vacancies.”

Vaccine obligations will affect more than 40,000 employees. However, with 305,000 students returning to class, Vellardita states that the discussion should focus on students as well as workers.

“I think it’s the leadership’s responsibility to take on the issue. It will obviously affect our sitting and negotiating at the table. I understand. Tell one or the other what to do. Not at all, but what we’re talking about is leads, “Vellardita adds.

The Clark County School Administrators Association says it has received an email from CCSD asking them to meet about their employees’ vaccination obligations and confirm where they are standing. Currently, the meeting has not been set up yet.

Once CCSD and CCEA reach an agreement on mandates, the issue returns to the school board.

Linda Cavazos, Chairman of the CCSD Board of Education, told 8 News. Currently she has not received the latest information on this topic.

8 News Now has contacted CCSD for more information and is currently waiting for a response.
