The death of George Floyd in 2020 last year has made some changes in the United States over the past year as people and businesses are talking more and more about diversity, fairness and inclusiveness.
Companies embrace change and implement diversity, equity and inclusion policies and training as part of their corporate culture. Goodwill Industries International, Inc. Recently hired Dr. Samantha Ray Dickerson (EdD, MPH) as the new director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). She oversees the diversity, fairness and inclusiveness of US and Canadian goodwill organizations.
Dr. Dickerson is a DEI strategist and is passionate about helping people left out of society, especially African-American women, with his personal experience and extensive research in this area. .. Throughout her career, Dr. Dickerson’s goal is to create systematic change for the voiceless, and Goodwill’s mission is closely linked to her own personal values and passion for helping people. It states that it matches. She began her career in the field of accreditation, examining and investigating cultural abilities, diverse recruitment factors for teachers, post-traumatic slavery syndrome, and how people interact with each other. Critical racial theory is the framework of her research, and she says she herself experienced some microaggression during her career.
“Goodwill will work with 156 individual organizations to support them,” said Dr. Dickerson. “Goodwill’s mission was to move people of all backgrounds forward while removing barriers. Internal and external strategic plans to develop tools and resources to enable member organizations to improve their own processes. Dr. Dickerson said goodwill organizations in Georgia and Metro Atlanta also have access to her and their resources. In addition, she has direct reports and contacts to the CEO of Goodwill. She previously worked at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) knowing about her DEI commitment to a portfolio of black employees and the life cycle of black Americans at NIH during COVID-19. ..
“I experienced microaggression in my previous role and personal life. Black shootings like Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown influenced me as a black woman and influenced the black community.” Said Dr. Dickerson. “I have seen and experienced racism and subtle discriminatory behavior rooted in discrimination. Research and research throughout my career has been the most rewarding. I have no say or opportunity. We know that we are playing a role in defending and fighting those who do not have access to, and we are deliberately using that skill set for DEI. “
Dr. Dickerson says she is in an industry that serves people left out of society, and people in her industry are helping people cope with their traumatic experiences. She says her work is never stopped and there is tort in today’s DEI space. Her focus has always been on serving people and others. Talking about her new job at Goodwill, she said she wanted to be a comfortable place to work in ethical and moral harmony.
“I want to make sure that DEI is woven into the company’s operations and help the company take direction, promote unity and take responsibility for leadership,” said Dr. Dickerson. According to Dr. Dickerson, the 156 Goodwill Stores are run independently by the local board of directors and management to tailor services to the needs of the local market. They are not independent of Goodwill Industries International, Inc. She received a certificate of diversity and inclusiveness from Cornell University. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Winston Salem State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. She received her PhD from the University of New England from an educational leadership program focused on leadership and organizational management. She currently works in Rockville, Maryland.
“I feel really good about it,” Dr. Dickerson said of her new job at Goodwill Industries International. “I feel I have all the resources and tools I have to do my job and succeed.”
