Las Vegas (KLAS) — The Dreamsickle Kids Foundation, Nevada’s first sickle cell disease (SCD) tissue, will host its fourth online charity walk online directly at the Pearson Community Center on September 25th.
The event took place online and face-to-face at the Pearson Community Center on 1625 W. Carey Avenue.
The event hopes to raise awareness of SCD and financing to help individuals affected by this rare disease in Nevada. SCD is a hereditary red blood cell disorder that affects approximately 70,000 to 100,000 Americans.
This year’s walk was unique in that it was co-sponsored by the Red Cross in southern Nevada, which hosted a blood drive within the community center on the same day.
To increase the variety of blood donations to SCD patients, the Red Cross is currently screening donors identified as African-American for sickle cell trait (SCT).
Earlier this month, Governor Steve Sisolak declared September as Sickle Cell Recognition Month in Nevada, following the White House, as well as a month for SCD recognition.
The event is sponsored by the following pharmaceutical companies:
Global Blood Therapeutics, Bluebird Bio, Vertex, Emmaus, and Novartis.
This event also has local support from:
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Albertsons, Whole Foods, Nevada Healthlink, JET Foundation, Las Vegas Area Council Boy Scouts America.
What makes the above pharmaceutical companies special is that they all have FDA-approved SCD treatments or are working on SCD-specific treatments.
Prior to 2017, no drug was used or created specifically for SCD for nearly 30 years.
