Driver in car fleeing traffic stop is killed, his passenger injured in crash in Anoka

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that the driver died after colliding with a car in Anoka while fleeing an attempt to stop traffic at Coon Rapids.

According to the sheriff’s office, a car and a pickup truck collided on the main street near Ferry Street just before midnight on Tuesday. The pickup driver was slightly injured.

The sheriff’s office said earlier Wednesday that both people had died in the car and issued a revised news release in the afternoon.

The driver was identified as Brian E. Harper of St. Paul, 30 years old. According to the sheriff’s office, it was St. Cloud’s Germain R. Beasley, 32, who was hospitalized for an unspecified injury.

According to the sheriff’s office:

Coon Rapids police tried to stop traffic around 11:35 pm northwest. Hanson Boulevard near the northwest. Gateway drive. Harper ran away and police chased him.

“The Coon Rapids officers have been completely released and the chase is over when the car crosses Anoka, a statement from the sheriff’s office read.

The crash occurred about a mile away. Harper died on the scene and Beesley was taken to a hospital near “unknown” by an emergency medical responder, reading an afternoon news release from the sheriff’s office.
