LODI (CBS13) – A tragedy struck Rody Church on Easter Sunday as a fire broke out early in the morning and destroyed buildings.
A large amount of smoke and fire was consumed and seen from outside the church of El Shadai and Christ in the strip mall along Cherokee Lane. According to the Lodi Fire Department, the flames “eat up the building” after 5 am. The entire roof of the building collapsed and fell to the ground.
The rest of the hotspots continued to pop out in the evening hours. The church minister said the congregation had moved to this space within two months. They refurbished the interior of the building and planned a festive Easter egg hunt and service on Sunday afternoon.
The fire brigade says it was a miracle that it was able to save the other half of the strip mall. With the exception of the Wild Chinese Buffet, most businesses in the space were closed on Sundays. Owner Jason Kwon said it was a blessing that he was still in business.
“I was in the parking lot here when I got on a lot of fire trucks this morning,” Kwon said.
Investigators say it will take some time to determine the cause of the fire. The damage made it difficult for investigators to enter the building.
