TDCJ has 61 employees who died in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tyler, Texas — The Texas Criminal Justice Department mourns the death of an employee in eastern Texas who died of COVID-19.

According to TDCH, 48-year-old Chris Watson, a prison officer in Rusk’s Hodge Unit, died Wednesday.

Officer Watson tested positive for COVID-19 on August 26 and was admitted to Tyler Hospital on August 29.

He began his TDCJ career in May 1994. He has been working in the Memorial (formerly Darrington) unit since September 2009 and came to the Hodge unit in October 2017.

“Executive Watson has served the institution with honor for 26 years. His commitment to Texas citizens is unforgettable,” said Brian Collier, Executive Secretary of TDCJ. “I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues for his death.”

Hodge Unit Senior Warden Larry Berger said Watson is an asset and is respected by his boss and colleagues.

“He was a quiet person, but when he spoke, he always had a message of uplifting thoughts and words of encouragement,” he added.
