Raytheon Honors TUSD Teacher

Three teachers from the Tucson Unified School District have been selected as finalists for the Raytheon Education Leader Award. One of them has risen as one of the top four winners.

Ernesto Somoza, a graphics and web design teacher at Pueblo High School, has been named Raytheon’s High School Education Leader.

“I chose this profession because I know that teaching our students today is an investment in our future,” Somoza said in a TUSD news release. “Students may not understand how much power they need to make a difference within their school or community.”

Other TUSD finalists included Christopher Ryan, a language teacher at Dodge Traditional Middle Magnet School, and Patricia Perez, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Pueblo Gardens K-8.

The Raytheon Leaders in Education Award aims to recognize educators who are contributing to schools and communities.

AEF Teacher of Year Finalist

According to this week’s AEF news release, one Pima County teacher was a finalist and the other two were semi-finals of the Arizona Education Foundation’s 2022 Teacher of the Year Awards.

In addition to the Teacher of the Year award, AEF has nominated the top four finalists as Ambassadors for Excellence and is a spokesperson for classroom excellence.
