Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden is spread across 500 acres of land in the capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar. Ekamra Kanan literally means, it is not just a regular park but has various other attractions housed in it too. It was established in the year 1985 and is also a part of Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) which is a research organization of the government of Odisha. A striking feature about this botanical garden is that it is separated from Chandaka Reserve Forest Bhubaneswar city by its backside wall. The Chandaka Reserve Forest consists of various wild animals including large groups of forest elephants.

Ekamra Kanan houses a wide variety of flora. Around 100 acres of the 500 acres of land occupied by this garden is covered in flora. Huge trees are in abundance in here. The Botanical Garden has other major attractions.
There is a small lake inside the garden. Boating was carried out in this lake earlier but now it’s prohibited. The lake covers a vast area. Now people just take pictures by it. There are benches lined facing the lake in Ekamra Kanan Botanical garden. One can enjoy the view of the lake comfortably while sitting on the bench even during afternoons. A large number of trees are lined all around the benches which shade even during afternoons. But the best time to sit by the lake is during evenings. Being located in a coastal region the city of Bhubaneswar enjoys the cool mild sea breeze in the evening. Sitting by the lake with your loved one with your hair swaying in the air is all one needs for a perfect evening. The lake and the wetland around it also attracts various migratory birds around it. Watching these birds is a treat to the eyes. The lake attracts a large number of people of all age groups.
Another wonderful attraction is the Glass House. The Glass House houses different varieties of cactus. To be exact the Glass House has more than 1500 varieties of cacti and succulents. It is the largest cactus collection in the whole of Asia. Hence, it is popularly known as the cactus garden. Plus there are areas developed as flower gardens of different varieties.
There also exists a beautiful musical fountain housed inside the botanical garden. It is a preferred location for tourists to taking pictures. There also exists a large number of little sprinklers in the lawns housed inside Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden.
In addition to all of this there exists a children’s park inside the botanical garden. Children below the age of 12 years are allowed to play in the park. There exists various little rides inside the park. Children mainly come during evenings along with their parents to play in the botanical garden.
There also exists a 3km walkway. Many people come and jog, walk and stroll during evenings.
The Plant Lovers Association in collaboration with Regional Plant Resources Centre organizes a flower show every year in Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden. They showcase flowers grown without the use of fertilizers and pesticides. This event looks colourful and is a treat to the eyes. The flower show is conducted in the month of January. Entry is ticketed. A garden competition is also conducted in order to encourage people for raising a garden.
This place is also popular among love birds. It the most preferred escape for couples as the aura of the place is serene as there exists no disturbance inside the garden complex.
During winters this place is also popular as a picnic spot. Friends and families with their near and dear ones come to spend winter mornings and afternoons.
A Tourist’s Guide to Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden
It is located on the Jaydev Vihar to CRP Square inner road near N3 which is at a distance of 2km from national highway 5 or NH5. Being suited in the main city, this places encounters a huge influx of local people who mostly come during the evening to relax with their near and dear ones.
The nearest railway station is Bhubaneswar Railway Station and the nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport which is located in the same city.
Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden is open on days of the week from 6am to 7pm during summers and 6am to 6pm during winters. Entry is ticketed. It is Rs.20 per person.
