Miami County, Kansas (KCTV)-At a railroad crossing in the countryside of Miami County, a car and train crashed and rang and flashed for hours until late at night after two people died.
Captain Matthew Kelly, Sheriff of Miami County, said he received a 911 call after 6 pm on Thanksgiving. He said the victim was an elderly couple in the Kansas City metropolitan area and apparently had just left a family Thanksgiving supper nearby.
“This is an emotional call not only to our families, but to us in the field as well as to everyone involved,” Kelly said.
He said it’s not yet clear why Union Pacific trains and sedans collided with 255th Avenue and Ridgeview Road and Wagstaff Road, just south of Ridgeview. He said investigators would look at the train’s dashcam to determine if the bells, lights, and gates were working when the sedan crossed the railroad tracks.
He said they believed it was a slow-moving freight train. When the train was about to stop, the couple’s car was pushed down a considerable distance onto the railroad tracks. A car broke out somewhere.
“I think it would make it even more traumatic on holidays like this,” Kelly said. “The family is definitely suffering. They are struggling and we send condolences and condolences to the family.”
He said their sheriff’s office made a representative visit with the family to check their needs and see how they could help. They also confirm with emergency personnel about their well-being.
