Portland, OregonPortland Tribune) — European transport company FlixMobility and Northwestern bus service MTR Western have collaborated to launch a new electric bus route in the Pacific Northwest. The plan is for the “FlixBus” interstate electric bus route to stop in Seattle, Portland, Corvallis and Eugene and begin in 2022.

The pilot program departed Seattle on November 28 and made two trips ending at Union Station in Portland. After a three-hour charging layover on Electric Island on Swan Island, an all-electric bus headed for Corvallis and Eugene.

“Since entering the US market in 2018, FlixBus has believed in the potential of the US intercity bus system,” said Pierre Gourdain, managing director of FlixBus USA. “With this project, we continue our path of providing sustainable and affordable mobility to millions of people and ensure that intercity buses are at the center of the green mobility revolution. “

The pilot program is designed to explain the feasibility of the route, but to make the electric bus a regular option, it requires an additional high-voltage charging station that can accommodate large vehicles. Currently, Electric Island is the only charging station with space and infrastructure to charge the bus.

Todd Paulson, Operations Director at MTR Western, said: “To do something like this, we need more of these stations across the Pacific Northwest. Today we were fully charged in Seattle and were 30% when we arrived in Portland. We need to charge the bus. We need to go to Corvallis and Eugene and recharge here. “

FlixBus launched the United States’ first long-distance electric motor coach in California on the route between San Francisco and Sacramento in October 2019. MTR Western currently operates diesel buses on the Seattle-Eugene route.

Electric bus routes may soon become more practical in operation. The US Infrastructure Bill has allocated $ 65 billion to improve the country’s power grid and $ 39 billion to improve the country’s public transport system, including clean energy funding. The bill includes funding for the development of new bus routes and improved access to public transport.
