“Many people are laid off, some lose their jobs, some have to work shorter hours, and some have financial difficulties due to multiple deaths in their families. All of this is due to Covid, “said ERAP director Donnie Quintana.
According to Quintana, qualified participants can receive up to 15 months of rental and utility assistance. This program also helps cover temporary accommodation costs at the hotel for those who have recently been kicked out.
“In addition, we also offer first month, last month, and monthly deposits, which can help people move to new rental units,” said Quintana.
To qualify, the applicant must be in New Mexico, at risk of homelessness or housing instability, below 80% of the median average income for each county.
The application requires multiple documents that indicate the degree of financial difficulty of the applicant. Applicants are also required to submit documents showing how they were directly or indirectly affected by COVID-19.
Currently, approximately 17,500 New Mexicans are supported by rent and utilities through ERAP. The total amount is $ 43 million. New Mexico has received $ 170 million from the federal government for use between now and September next year. This means that we still have about $ 127 million in funding and no expiration date.
“We have recently collaborated with and collaborated with nonprofits targeting people at risk, people like domestic violence, or those who have lost their jobs and now live in shelters. And have them apply for the program. ”Quintana“ Its safety net so that we can apply, learn about the program, and ultimately include everyone who may be supported by the program. Is cast as widely as possible. “
