On Monday, a loud bang was heard outside a house in Chicago, which turned out to be the sound of a United Airlines jet tumbled off the plane and slammed into the side of the house.
United Airlines has not commented on how it happened and an investigation is ongoing.
But the family who found the big plane parts are so glad no one was hurt.
“It… hit the downspout and fell straight down,” said Patrick Devitt, pointing to his home.
“It’s like that,” Devitt said, having fallen in the garden and “smashed” a lot of plants.
A United official said the slide fell from a Boeing 767 arriving at O’Hare International Airport from Switzerland.
David’s house is very close to O’Hare, below the flight path. But he said the incident was the first of its kind.
“If it had been a few inches east, it would have hit home,” David said. “So we are very lucky.”
They were especially lucky given that David’s 2-year-old son was eating lunch indoors with his grandfather.
David said he and his stepfather dragged the 6-foot-by-6-foot crumpled slide into his front yard and called the police and other authorities.
“A woman we spoke to at the Ministry of Aviation told us, ‘So how do you know it’s from an airplane?'” David recalled. “‘Well, it’s because we have a giant slide bigger than a car in our backyard, ma’am. It’s from an airplane, of course.’
United Airlines said 155 passengers and 10 crew members were on board, adding that the crew did not realize the slide was missing until after it landed. O’Hare’s maintenance workers also noticed it.
The police came to the house and confirmed that the slide had indeed fallen from the plane.
“I think we know there could be a pattern here,” said Joe Schwietermann, a transportation expert at DePaul University.
The same thing happened in Boston in 2019. An investigation revealed that an emergency slide from a Delta 767-300 had fallen in the Boston suburb of Milton due to an improperly closed door.
“Given there have been some concerns about this device in the past, I think we will do a thorough investigation,” Schwietermann said.
United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration say it will happen.
David said he plans to stay in touch with United in the future.
“We will definitely get in touch with them,” he said.
