US announces temporary ceasefire in Sudan

A deadly conflict between two warring factions in Sudan has reached a temporary ceasefire after more than a month of fighting, the US State Department said Saturday.

A short-term ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia in Jeddah was signed on Saturday and will go into effect at 9:45 p.m. Central African time on Monday, the State Department said. The deal will last seven days and could be extended by mutual agreement, the State Department said.

The State Department said in a news release that the two countries also agreed to allow “the unimpeded flow of goods from the port of entry to those in need.”
