End of eviction moratorium brings out scammers – Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa, Oklahoma 2021-06-14 15:20:54 –

Tulsa, Oklahoma-Federal COVID-19 Expulsion of Relief The moratorium portion is scheduled to end this month, and fraudsters are raiding.

Some lessees who have been hit financially by the pandemic are scared. They are desperately looking for money to pay their current rent or months of backrent before the federal peasant eviction moratorium ends in a few weeks.

That fear has made some lessees a major target for fraudsters. One scam starts like many other scams. It’s a phone. The call promises to help lessors stay in their homes by borrowing hundreds or even thousands of dollars from the federal government.

Tulsa’s mom, Tulsa, who has four children, answered one of those calls.

“Just before the end of the federal program, I got a call from a man who said he could get the hundreds of dollars he needed to catch up with his rent. Instead, he lost the hundreds of dollars I left behind. “She said.

The caller told her that they had to hurry before they were kicked out, and told her that the money from the federal government was running out soon. The scammer needed Tara’s bank account, and the money was deposited in a few days.

She felt urgent and informed them. Tara saw the last $ 400 withdrawn instead of putting money in her account.

Crushed, Tara said, “Now we may be kicked out of the house, and I don’t even have enough money to feed my children.”

She knows that the last dollar from her account is gone forever, but still wants to warn others in the same situation.

No matter how scary you are:

  • Don’t be fooled by scammer tricks
  • Don’t answer strange phone calls
  • In particular, do not provide personal or financial information to anyone who suddenly sends a phone call, text message, or email.

Legitimate federal aid for lessees is still available, and 2 News pointed out to Tara.

In northeastern Oklahoma, Restore Hope Ministries is backing millions of federal dollars. So far, Restore Hope has provided $ 3.6 million in rental assistance over the last two months. It still has $ 16 million available to help more tied up renters.

Restore Hope can provide assistance in 20 counties in northeastern Oklahoma, basically all counties with 918 area codes north of I-40.
