VISALIA — Veteran lawyer Erin Brooks will take over the new Tulare County Public Defender on Sunday.
Tulare County Supervisory Board announced on Tuesday that Brooks would replace Lisa Bertolino Muting, who is retiring.
“I am convinced that Erin is a quality choice for the position of public defender,” Chairman of the Board Amy Schkrian said in a news release. “Her controlled series of cases, from misdemeanor to murder, including the death penalty, will bring great benefits to the public defender’s office, along with her long-term commitment to Tulare County.”
This office represents people who have been charged with crime in state court and cannot afford to hire a private lawyer. The Tulare County Public Defender’s Office has a special team for handling mental health and juvenile issues.
Brooks joined the office in 2004
Brooks graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Criminal Justice in 2000. She received her PhD in Law from the California Western School of Law in 2003. A year later, she joined the Tulare County Public Defense Agency. And in 2017, I became the chief lawyer.
“I look forward to working with Erin and her new role. Erin’s various experiences, leadership skills and expertise will help the county,” said Jason, Chief Administrative Officer of Tulare County. T. Brit said.
Brooks’ base salary is $ 175,000 per year.
Bertolino-Mueting was a public defender in the county for almost seven years.
