Miller High School senior Kassandra Sandoval received two $ 1,000 scholarships on her campus on Friday.
Sandoval received two scholarships from author AJ Mata and Miller graduate Manuel Arismendi.
After writing a 500-word essay about Mata’s book “Wake UP,” she received a $ 1,000 scholarship with an autographed copy of his book and a gift basket. Mata said she chose her for a scholarship because of her leadership and a long list of extracurricular activities.
“You have contributed to the community by serving in the food bank and helping to raise awareness of breast cancer,” Mata said. “I hope it is with you.”
Arismendi, who graduated from Miller in 1967, said he felt that Sandval was more representative of his alma mater than all other applicants. He started the Arismendi scholarship nearly a decade ago to give back to the students who need it most.
“I’m happy to offer her this scholarship,” said Alice Mendi. “She has a wonderful young woman with a big head on her shoulders.
Sandval will attend Del Mar College in the fall semester to earn a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies. Inspired by her mother, she said she wanted to get into the profession.
“I saw how hard she worked in the pandemic last summer,” Sandval said. “I was inspired just to see what she was doing for others.”
