Los Angeles-For over 50 years, ESSENCE has been a staple of black culture and has grown into a leading media, technology and commerce company serving black women and the community.

Caroline Wanga, CEO of ESSENCE Communications Inc. and CEO of ESSENCE Ventures, explained the origin of the brand in an interview with Storytellers Spotlight of On The Red Carpet.

“The ESSENCE brand was born when black women didn’t fully understand what they were supposed to be. It was 50 years ago when many other black brands existed. […] Also existed.
