Tirana, Albania (AP) — Albania’s Minister of Infrastructure said Thursday that “mandatory” flights were resumed at the country’s only international airport after a strike by air traffic controllers.

Belinda Balluku said important humanitarian, emergency, health, diplomatic, state and military flights will resume and commercial flights will begin on Friday morning.

The minister did not say whether air traffic controllers resumed work or whether authorities hired foreign controllers to replace them.

Approximately twenty Albanian air traffic controllers have been cross-examined by police on suspicion of post-strike abuse over wage disputes, lawyers and prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, the Albanian government dispatched troops and police to clear offensive controllers from the Air Traffic Control Tower and its offices.

According to lawyer Rezart Kthupi, 24 out of a total of 65 controllers were cross-examined by police overnight.

The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office said they could face up to seven years in prison if they were convicted of abusing the post.

The airport suspended 19 flights on Wednesday. Private air traffic controllers said their “inability to work under stress” would last for 24 hours.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said the strike was illegal.

In a meeting with supporters in southern Albania, “destructive forces, absolutely blind forces, past forces who absolutely want to take the country hostage cannot stop us,” Lama said. It was.

The controller union says the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced salaries by 62% over the past year. According to Balluku, Albania’s air traffic fell by 57% over the same period.

The minister said air traffic controllers were paid $ 2,490 per month. This is five times the national average salary of about $ 500.

Strikes have also turned into political issues. The government accused the opposition and President Ilir Meta of instigating the strike, the latter denying blame for Rama’s misuse prior to the April 25 elections.
