Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (WFLA)-Eta, the 28th Atlantic named storm of the year in the Caribbean on Saturday night, has been fortified by a major hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm is expected to bring life-threatening storm surges, damaging winds, flash floods and land to parts of Central America on Monday.

At 4:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Monday, Eta’s maximum wind speed was 130 mph. It has become the fifth major hurricane of the 2020 season.

The storm was moving west at 9 mph. It is expected that strengthening and landing in Nicaragua will continue on Tuesday. It is expected to weaken as it moves inland.

Many of Nicaragua and Honduras are 35-inch isolated instances, with the potential for 15-25-inch rain. Dangerous storm surges can also occur in Nicaragua, with water levels in the hurricane warning area 12-18 feet higher than normal.
