European Union leaders will give Ukraine the status of a candidate to participate in the block of 27 countries.

This is the first step in a long and unpredictable journey towards full membership and can take years to complete. Making Ukraine a competitor now seems to be a successful deal. However, national leaders were initially divided on how quickly they would accept the war-torn country’s demands to become an EU member state.

The Ukrainian government applied for it just days after Russia attacked its neighbor on February 24th. EU candidacy does not give potential members the automatic right to join the block.

The start of membership negotiations depends on Ukraine meeting essential political and economic conditions.

Recently, four European leaders jointly visited Kieu and stood next to Volodymyr Zelensky at a press conference. Leaders from France, Italy, Germany and Romania have expressed their support for Ukraine’s entry.

“The most important message of our visit is that Italy wants Ukraine in the European Union, Ukraine has a candidate position and wants to support this position in the next European Council. That’s what Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi said at a joint press conference in Kyiv.
