San Francisco (AP) —The American Evangelical Lutheran Church has set up its first openly transgender bishop at a worship held at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco on Saturday.

Rev. Megan Rohrer leads one of the church’s 65 synods and oversees nearly 200 congregations in Northern California and Northern Nevada.

“My call is … to do the same nasty and affectionate things as before,” Laura told worshipers. “But most of the time, if you forgive me, and if you think so, my hope is to love you and beyond that to love what you love.”

Rohrer was elected to serve a six-year term as Bishop of Sierra Pacific Synod in May after the current bishop announced his retirement.

“I stepped into this role because the diverse Lutheran communities of Northern California and Nevada voted prayerfully and thoughtfully to do historic things,” Laura said in a statement. I did. “My installation will celebrate everything possible when God trusts to move us forward.”

Roller, who uses the pronoun “they”, previously served as pastor of the Gray Lutheran Church in San Francisco and pastor coordinator of the city police station, and also helped the city’s homeless and LGTBQ community pastors. They studied religion at Augustana University, home of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and then moved to California to earn a master’s and doctoral degree from the Pacific Cool of Religion in Berkeley.

Rohrer became one of the seven LGBTQ pastors accepted by the progressive Evangelical Lutheran Church in 2010 after allowing ordination of same-sex pastors. Rohrer is married and has two children.

The church is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with approximately 3.3 million members.
