“Everyone loved her,” said West Florence’s senior Kali Stewart. “Everyone loved her. She was very sweet. She confirmed that everyone was okay.”

On the first day of Stewart’s high school, she was greeted by Gerald in first class. Her warmth erased the nerves of the first day.

“And I would be very excited to enter, and I would be like,’This woman makes my day,'” Stewart said. “She has a very positive attitude.”

According to his family, Gerald was 68 when he died. Even after decades of teaching, they were unaware of her plans to retire soon.

“She taught me that it’s not in the book and that we can withstand it throughout our lives,” said a 2013 graduate of West Florence Devonford. “That’s what I remember most about her, only her influence on us as individuals.”

Ford is currently a Rock Hill-based visual artist.

“She was one of the few black teachers I came to,” Ford said. “I remember that most of us were black, especially in my class, and you know that expression is really important to color students.”

Gerald was also an advisor to the former captain group, Sensational Night Steppers.

“MS. Gerald, if you didn’t give me the courage to continue, and if you … didn’t motivate me when I was in high school, I wouldn’t have chased my dreams at all,” she says. It was.

In addition to being a great teacher, the family says she was “a devoted wife, a great mother, and a very good grandmother.”

The full statement of Matthew Daudel, Principal of West Florence, is as follows:

It’s heartfelt to share the news that my beloved teacher, Dorothy Gerald, has died.

Gerald has been a pillar of West Florence High School for over 40 years. Her dedication and dedication to students, teachers, and communities lives on in our hearts. The wisdom she shared and her charismatic personality are greatly overlooked by everyone. Tomorrow, our building will have a grieving counselor for students and staff who need to mourn someone. As more information becomes available about the arrangement, I’ll tell everyone about it. Keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.
