Milwaukee (NEXSTAR) — A former Wisconsin pharmacist who deliberately ruined more than 500 COVID-19 vaccines was sentenced to three years in prison.

Grafton’s Stephen Brandenberg was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in February for two felony attempts to tamper with consumer products in February.

Brandenburg admitted at Grafton’s Aurora Medical Center, just north of Milwaukee, that he deliberately took the medicine produced by Modana out of the refrigerator for several hours.

After ruining the dose of vaccine, he said he put them back in the fridge. At least 57 people received doses that Brandenburg deliberately spoiled before authorities realized what Brandenburg was doing, according to the Wisconsin District Attorney’s Office.

“A deliberate attempt to waste vaccine doses in a national public health emergency is a serious crime,” said Acting Attorney General Brian Boynton of the Civil Affairs Department of the Department of Justice. “The Justice Department will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to protect these life-saving vaccines.”

Convicted pharmacy employees were skeptical of vaccines in general, especially of Moderna vaccines, in a plea bargaining agreement. According to court documents, he kept his opinion secret. I didn’t. Over the last two years, I’ve been telling my colleagues how he felt about the vaccine.

Brandenburg said in a statement before the ruling that he felt “very embarrassed” and acknowledged responsibility for his actions.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that he apologized to his colleagues, family and community.

“The FDA has confirmed that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine meets the authorities’ strict standards for safety, efficacy, and manufacturing quality. Anyone who deliberately tampers with this vaccine will improve the health of American patients. It puts you at risk, “said FDA’s aide to criminal investigation, Catherine A. Helmsen. “Today’s announcement must remind us that this kind of fraudulent tampering is unacceptable.”

In addition to the three-year sentence, Brandenburg will have to spend another three years on release under supervision and pay the hospital $ 83,800 in damages.
