Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – Many New Mexico summer camps have reopened. The children and counselors were excited to be back.
The children will return to the children again. Splash in the pool or take part in a dodgeball pick-up game. Matthew Westerland, director of the JCC Albuquerque camp, said, “Everyone is very excited today.
Last year, a pandemic canceled all summer camps. “It was a shame and a matter of course for everyone. Last year we couldn’t implement the program like many other groups in the city,” said Westerlund. But this year the camp has resumed-with some safety changes, of course.
“We needed to reduce the number of registrants,” says Westerlund. “We really needed to increase the presence of our outdoor activities. We needed to minimize the interaction of campers with different groups and cohorts.”
JCC Albuquerque says it cleans each space after use and has built a new shade structure to provide more space for children to work outside. But that’s not all. “We are constantly increasing the hiring of vigilant staff to ensure that such an environment is as safe as possible for everyone,” Westerland said.
And of course, make sure your kids always wear masks. The JCC says it wants camp participants to be safe and have a good time at the same time. “This is the real challenge,” says Westerlund. “I’m trying to retain my past identity, but of course I’m trying to adapt to the current climate.”
