Winter Haven, FloridaWFLA) — Florida police station faces backlash on social media after seeking community help to identify a man who stole diapers and wipes from Wal-Mart after two credit cards were rejected ..

On Saturday, the Winter Haven police station posted an image on Facebook showing two young children and a man with a cart containing diapers and wipes from a surveillance camera in the store. According to police, the theft took place on September 15.

According to a Facebook post, the man tried to buy an item in the self-checkout lane, but his card was rejected several times.

Officers say he left the item behind and returned to the store to try another card. When the card was also rejected, police say he took the item anyway.

“Therefore, if your card is rejected and you try another card with the same result, it’s not a license to take the item out anyway,” police said in a post.

Many Facebook commenters said it was unpleasant for police to publicize diaper theft in the same way as theft of more expensive and less-needed items such as electronics.

“What happened to WHPD to protect and serve? I don’t tolerate stealing, but see why you can all step up and help this dad instead of hitting him Don’t. I’ll help you pay for diapers and wipes, “commented one person.

“Once you know who he is, please send him information so that you can pay a year’s diapers and wipes for his children,” another comment said. ..

If you admitted the man, police asked the community to call the department at 863-291-5736.
For families who need diapers, you can contact Champions for Children (813-673-4646).
