Socially distant pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students in Fairfax County masks, unlike others, were set to begin in-class learning on Tuesday from the first day of school.

Fairfax County has chosen to open backups for the youngest students, earlier than most elementary, junior high and high school students. A larger group of special education students were also set to return on Tuesday.

Desks are located 6 feet apart, and many schools have stickers in the hallways that remind children to stay away. One classroom surrounded the desk with blue and yellow tape to help the children know where to go.

Children are required to bring a face mask, a reusable water bottle, and their school supplies with the full name label. Parents can also consider sending disinfectant wipes, personal tissues, and hand sanitizers.

Full virtual learning is still being performed for families who demand it, and the classroom is set up so that children learning from home can ask questions without missing out.

When additional grades return to school, Fairfax County uses a simultaneous teaching model in which students receive two days of teacher-led instruction at the school building and two days of instruction at home.
