Timmonsville, South Carolina (WBTW) – The first meeting to discuss the integration of Florence One School and Florence School District Four was held earlier this week. Some parents say they feel their concerns are unresolved. Many said they left the meeting without new information. They say they need to know which school their students go to and how they get there.
“We are known as whirlwinds. The fact that basketball, soccer and whirlwinds are gone,” said Shaquanda Eli. Eli’s daughter attends a junior high school in Timmonsville. She says the meeting felt unproductive.
“They weren’t really talking about the transition,” Eli said. “I don’t think they were ready for the meeting. I think they weren’t organized.” She said how her daughter traveled to Florence for class and what there. He said he was worried about the availability of the opportunity.
“They aren’t working on student issues,” said Laurie Galambos. She said she was most worried about her oldest one, who would only spend his fourth grade in the new school.
“They will lose everything from class rings to senior photos,” Galambos said. It’s unfair. “She said many of the meetings focused on the questions the Commission had with the State Department, not on parental concerns.
A South Carolina Ministry of Education spokesperson said this was a referral meeting. He hopes that his parents’ concerns will be addressed at a later meeting. The next transition meeting is scheduled for July 12.
