Family of fallen St. Louis police officer reflect on loss as FBI data shows uptick in violence against police | St. Louis News Headlines – St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, Missouri 2021-10-21 22:00:00 –

NS. LOUIS (KMOV.com)-More than 60,000 law enforcement officers were assaulted on duty in 2020, up 7% from 2019, according to data released by the FBI this week.

A total of 60,105 police officers were assaulted, an increase of 4,071 from the previous year. The FBI collects annual data from approximately 10,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide.

One of the police officers fired on Saturday in southern St. Louis was injured and killed in response to a call for shooting.

One of the 46 police officers killed on duty in 2020 was St. Louis police officer Tamaris Bohannon.

“Knowing that someone took our son away from us for no reason had a lot to deal with,” said Elizabeth Bohannon.

Bohannon was killed in August 2020 after responding to a standoff situation in the southern neighborhood of Tower Grove Park. Police said he was shot by a suspect who hid himself in a nearby house.

“As long as there are good police officers here in St. Louis, he will always be memorable. It shows that it was part of him because their actions were their actions,” Al Al. Bohannon said.

Bohannon said his son had wanted to be a police officer since he was a teenager. Even after he died, strangers continue to share stories of time on the streets of Bohannon.

The man accused of shooting and killing two St. Louis police officers has a long history of crime in both Florida and Missouri.

Bohannon’s father said, “People will come to us, share their condolences, and then talk about the interactions they have had with him on the streets.” “Many people will think about how well he treated them, not only arresting them and imprisoning them, but also how he tried to go over for the people. “

This fall, the Tower Grove Park bench was dedicated in honor of Bohannon. It now functions as a place where the Bohannon family can visit near their lost loved ones and look back on their memories.

“It tells me that my son will be unforgettable, and that his sacrifice is of no use,” Elizabeth said. “We come here and look back to remember him and think about the good times, either as a family or as an individual.”

“I think it’s a great honor for the Tower Grove neighborhood and community to think of my son and immortalize him in this little way, but it’s a big way,” Al said.

This week, prayer and candlelight vigil have another gloomy moment.

The process of grief is difficult and sometimes easier than other days, but the family wants the respect for law enforcement officers to come back.

“I want people to understand that police officers are also people,” said Elizabeth Bohannon. “The majority of them don’t go out to harm anyone. Unfortunately, there are some bad species. There are bad people in any situation, but police officers just want to go home. I hope people will understand that. “

In the first nine months of 2021, 54 police officers were killed on duty, compared to 37 police officers in the same period in 2020.

According to FBI data, unprovoked attacks outweigh the deaths of all other ferocious police officers.
