Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) – Decades after death, war hero Father Emile Kapaun returns to Kansas on Saturday
Father Emile Kapaun died as a prisoner of war in 1951, but federal officials did not identify his body until this year.
His body arrived at Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport on Saturday morning. After a 24-hour trip from Honolulu.
“This was something we didn’t expect,” said Nick Delasega, who was waiting for Father Kapaun to arrive. “I think the fact that his body was not only discovered, but now, could have happened at any point in history, and it’s great to be here as part of it. That is, when you think about it, you get goose bumps. “
A small convoy moved the remains of Father Kapaun to his hometown of Pilsen. Thousands of people are expected to be waiting for his arrival to honor him.
Father Kapaung is a candidate for a saint. So far, only two American-born people have been canonized. The congregation of the Roman canonization is still considering documentation. To become a saint, the church must declare two miracles.
A public rally will take place on Tuesday and a funeral will take place on Wednesday at the Hartmann Arena.
He is enshrined in the tomb of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita.
