Vero Beach, Florida — From her home in Vero Beach, Florida, Joseph Petite says she needs help finding her missing daughter in Utah during a cross-country trip with her boyfriend.
“Pride isn’t a problem so far. My only daughter is missing,” he said. “I will do whatever I can to find my family, Gabby’s mom, and her.”
Petito said 22-year-old Gabby Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie had driven from Florida to New York. They left Blue Point, NY on July 2.
The couple even started a YouTube channel to record their trips.
“The trip started there, so it went to several different places,” Petit said. “I stopped by Colorado, went to Utah, went to Wyoming, and she intended to end up in Oregon.”
Gabby’s mom, Nicole Schmidt, held a press conference on Monday. She said her last conversation with her daughter was on August 25th. Schmidt said the two were in regular contact.
“I used to send FaceTime, phone calls, and text messages frequently, at least three times a week,” she says. “She kept me up to date on this trip.”
The family said the couple’s van had been recovered, but Gabby was missing.
“I thought she didn’t get a response for the first few days, but I think she was in an unserviced place,” Schmidt said. “Days 8 and 9 are when I’m really worried.”
Petit said his daughter had a good and free spirit.
“She saw beauty in everything, and … she’s amazing,” he said. “She is a really wonderful, wonderful person.”
Petito didn’t want to talk about Laundrie. However, he is reported to have hired a lawyer and has not spoken to the authorities.
