FDA expands Sportmix dog food recall after 70 dogs reportedly died | News Headlines – St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, Missouri 2021-01-12 19:00:00 –

(CNN)-The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the recall to show that some pet foods contain high levels of aflatoxin after 70 dogs have died and more than 80 have become ill. Warns owners and veterinary professionals.

The dog food in question has been identified as a particular Sportmix product manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods. According to the FDA, the product was voluntarily recalled by the company on December 30, 2020, but Midwestern Pet Foods expanded the recall to include corn and additional products manufactured at the Oklahoma manufacturing plant on Tuesday. Was included.

Affected products are valid before July 9, 2022 and contain “05” in the date or lot code.

The FDA states that aflatoxin is produced by Aspergillus flavus mold. It can grow on grains used as an ingredient in pet food, and when high levels of aflatoxin are consumed, it can cause illness and death in pets.

According to the FDA, pets poisoned with aflatoxin may exhibit symptoms such as insensitivity, jaundice (a yellowish tint of the eyes and gums caused by liver damage), loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Even if the pet does not show symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning, the FDA will contact the veterinarian as pet owners who have pets that have eaten the affected product can cause long-term liver damage. It is recommended to do.

The FDA states that there is no evidence that pet owners who handle affected foods are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning, but it is advisable to always wash their hands after handling pet food.

The following food items were added to the original recall, but the FDA states that they are not listed individually because the affected lot codes exceed 1000.

  • Propack Performance Puppy, 40 lb bag
