FDA wants to cut amount of nicotine in cigarettes – Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida 2022-06-22 12:09:34 –

The Food and Drug Administration wants to lower the maximum nicotine levels allowed for cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Authorities say the goal is to save lives and prevent people from becoming addicted to nicotine.

“Every year, 480,000 people die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses and use tobacco as a major cause of preventable illness and death in the United States,” the FDA said in a statement. “In addition, tobacco use costs about $ 300 billion annually in direct medical care and is a loss of productivity.”

The FDA claims that more than half of adults are about to quit each year, but nicotine is so addictive that it’s rarely successful.

“Reducing nicotine levels to low or non-addictive levels reduces the likelihood that future generations of youth will depend on tobacco and helps smokers who are currently dependent to quit smoking.” Said FDA Commissioner Robert Caliph.
