North Carolina (WSPA) – FEMA officials warn North Carolina residents to be aware of potential fraudsters impersonating disaster workers.
Survivors need to be aware that criminals can obtain money or attempt to steal personal information through fraud, fraud, and theft of personal information, they say. In some cases, thieves attempt to apply for FEMA assistance using the name, address, and social security number stolen from the survivor.
According to FEMA, residents should be aware of the following information while disaster relief teams, housing inspectors, and other personnel are at the location.
- Don’t trust anyone who demands money. Federal and local disaster workers do not demand or receive money. FEMA and US Small Business Administration representatives do not request applicants for disaster assistance, inspection, or assistance in filling out the application form.
- Don’t believe anyone who promises disaster subsidies in exchange for huge cash deposits or other full payments.
- Beware of unexpected phone calls and home visits from people who claim to be FEMA home inspectors or who claim to work for FEMA. The person may ask for your social security number and income or banking information. FEMA personnel will have a laminate badge and a FEMA application number.
- Protect the privacy of your 9-digit FEMA case / application number. A legitimate FEMA home inspector does not request this information.
- Do not give your bank information to anyone who claims to be a FEMA Home Inspector. FEMA inspectors are never allowed to collect your personal financial information.
Fraudulent building contractor
- Use a licensed or validated local contractor with a trusted reference.

- Do not prepay more than half of the repair cost.
- Ask the contractor to detail the work you expect and request a written quote.
Report the scam.
Reporting helps protect others, FEMA officials say. Contact the appropriate agency based on the type of scam you may see.
