Norcross, Georgia (CBS46) –On Saturday, the first and second floors of the JSD Apartment Complex in Norcross were hit by flames and heavy smoke.
“It’s like we’re screaming here … like the whole house … it’s like the house is on fire,” said 12-year-old Miragros Torres, a survivor of the fire.
Torres says she was inside the building when the flames burned.
Her family was able to go out on time.
“I was sleeping, but they had to wake me up and go out,” Torres explained.
The crew noticed the person trapped inside and immediately began rescue operations.
Gwinnett firefighters said, “When the fire broke out, there were two adult women at home in the apartment when it was reported that a smoke alarm was heard. She was able to wake up another resident. Pio Captain Tommy Rutridge.
“He’s always hello to me … how are you … and so on,” recalled nine-year-old Amy Torres and Miragros Torres’ sister.
With the help of the American Red Cross, the family is picking up some of what’s left.
The fire is under investigation.
