Firefighters on the Big Island reacted early this morning to a flame on the Kahaluu farmland in North Kona, where a large three-story house was nearly destroyed.
According to the captain, two people in the house managed to evacuate on their own when the fire broke out.
The Hawaii County Fire Department estimated that 80% to 90% of the three-story homes on Waiau Road were in flames when they arrived.
According to the fire department, the house was “likely to collapse” and fire extinguishing activities were restricted.
The alert time was 2:08 am and the first unit arrived at the scene at 2:16 am.
Three fire brigades and a battalion commander worked to extinguish the flames.
Firefighters controlled the fire at 3:07 am and extinguished it by 4:05 am.
Fire investigators estimate that the losses were in homes ranging from $ 765,000 to $ 900,000. The cause of the fire has not been clarified.
