A fire broke out in the basement of the three-story Yuai Kaikan along Minneapolis University Avenue on Thursday afternoon, evacuating buildings along this major boulevard near the University of Minnesota, according to the Minneapolis Fire Chief.
Fire chief Brian Tiner said early signs were that gasoline in the sewer system ignited and blew off several manholes along University Avenue.
No fire injuries have been reported at the Delta Tau Delta Friendship Society in 1700 blocks southeast of University Avenue.
Tiner said his department and CenterPoint Energy are working together to confirm the first suspicion that gasoline is involved in the fire.
