Newton, Kansas (KSNW) – Several firefighters spent Sunday morning honoring men and women who died in the 9/11 attack at YMCA in Newton. The firefighters who attended climbed 110 steps in memory of the 343 firefighters who died on the tragic day.
“Each of us climbed for one of the firefighters who died that day,” said Philip Biebe, director of EMS’s Newton Fire Training Department.
Beebe usually says he participates in this commemorative climb in Kansas City, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, he honors the hero who fell in Newton to commemorate his 20th anniversary.
“We are honored to think of the fallen firefighters and put a little effort into sweat and tears to commemorate them,” Beebe said.
Beebe says he looked back at those who made the “ultimate sacrifice” with each step.
“We sacrifice ourselves to serve other people who are law enforcement agencies as well as the fire department, and have nurses and doctors just to serve others to help others. “Yes,” said Beebe.
