Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – Regional One – operated by Med-Trans and Spartanberg Regional Healthcare Systems – provides speed in traumatic situations.
According to regional one pilot Jim Biddle, it generally takes about one-third of the time it takes to get a patient to the hospital compared to driving in an ambulance.
“We also have highly trained individuals with many years of experience who can offer a little more than regular ambulances,” says Biddle. “We can do almost everything they can do in the emergency room, except for helicopters.”
The need for service varies. According to Biddle, a week can pass without Regional One taking off, but you can call on five scenes overnight.
Regional One serves all four counties in and around Spartanburg County. The helicopter crew can also send patients to other hospitals such as Duke University, MUSC, and the Burn Treatment Center in Augusta, Georgia.
