After good water quality for most of the summer, five sites on the Tarpamurico River did not pass the swimming guide test this week. This indicates that swimming in these bodies of water may not be safe.
Greenville’s Port Terminal and Town Common, Pactolus’ Yankihoru, Washington’s Havens Garden and Mason’s Landing have been tested positive for a number of fecal bacteria that exceeds recommended recreational states and federal standards.
Boaters, swimmers, and their pets should avoid water or be careful in these areas. Exposure can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness and skin infections.
The Swim Guide is a local international water quality program run by Sound Rivers, an environmental non-profit organization whose mission is to keep waterways in North Carolina for fishing, swimming and drinking. Each week, a team of Sound Rivers volunteers collect water samples at 46 popular recreation sites along the Neuse and Tarpamuriko river basins, from the Raleigh Durham area to Pamlico Sound. After that, Sound Rivers staff will test the sample for E. coli and publish the results so that you can easily find a safe place to swim.
Eighteen sites have been tested in the Tarpamurico River basin. Rocky Mount — Tarriver Reservoir and Sunset Park. On the river road near Tarboro. Green Building — Town Common, Wildwood Park, Port Terminal, Yankihoru. In Washington — Mason’s Landing, Washington Waterfront, Heaven’s Garden Boat Lamp, Cypress Landing’s Chocowinity Bay, Swan Point, Pamlico Plantation’s Broad Creek, Bronze Bay, Cotton Patch Landing’s Bronz Creek. By Bus — Bonner and Plum Points. And Bell Haven — the Pungo River at Woodstock Point.
The Sound Rivers swim guide program is sponsored by Grade-White Boats, a water quality monitoring fund commemorating Gene Pate, UNC-Lenoir Health Care, Northwest Creek Marina, UNC Pavel Molchanov Scholars, Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership and Cypress Landing. .. , ECU SECU Public Fellows Internship Foundation, Coastal Carolina Health Care, Restoration Systems, Z.
