Lake City, South Carolina (WBTW) — Florence School District 3 is currently requesting masks from all students, staff, and visitors. This mission left an opinion on parents in many districts.

Parents in a district sent the following statement in support of Mask to News 13.

“I would like to say that I am 100% in favor of the school’s mask obligations. My son is currently absent from school for 10 days of quarantine because someone’s child tested positive in class. That means I have to miss work while he misses valuable school time. Mask-preventing parents refuse to wear masks for hours for their children. I’m unaware of the difficulties I’m causing. “

Parent Michelle Brown says wearing a mask is a challenge for her children, especially those with asthma.

“I want him to be able to breathe, and I want him to be able to breathe properly. He also has a speech disorder. It’s really hard to understand him. Then You wear a mask and it’s almost impossible to understand him, he tends to shut down and doesn’t attend much in class, “Brown said.

Mandates are valid until later noticed and are reassessed weekly to determine if they are still needed. Mandate decisions are based on SCDHEC and CDC guidelines, as well as an increase in the number of students and staff tested positive for COVID-19, and what is needed for quarantine.

According to district data, 150 students and staff tested positive for COVID-19 in August, but exposure to the virus isolated 1,142.

School bus passengers, including students and adults, also need masks. The South Carolina Department of Education has announced that it will begin forcing students and staff to use face covers on state-owned and operated school buses starting August 30.

“The health and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority,” said Laura Hixson, FSD3 overseer. “It is important for us as a district to continue to educate our children and do everything we can to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

The district says it evaluates the situation weekly to determine how long the mission remains.
