FLORENCE, South Carolina (WBTW) – The 2nd Annual Home Runs for Heroes Charity Softball Tournament in Florence aims to raise awareness of veterans’ mental health issues.

Warriors Whisper Team Coach Michael Kirby said:

Kirby said the team, made up of veterans, was formed to compete in the final iteration of the tournament, and mental health awareness is close to his heart.

“When you go to war, everybody hears the war cry of the warriors, but when you go home, nobody hears the warriors whispering to each other,” he said. “We have lost a lot. Since returning from Iraq, I have lost several members of my unit to suicide.”

The Warriors Whisper is one of nine teams competing in the nonprofit Beacon of Light Institute event for veterans.

Beacon of Light Founder and President Dr. Yolonda Holmes-Echols said: “Take care of your mental health, and everything else will be fine.”

Holmes-Echols said the organization’s aim is to connect veterans with resources such as housing and counseling, a point many of its competitors share.

“If you could change one person’s mindset, if you could let them know they weren’t alone, it was a successful tournament,” Kirby said.
